Christmas can often be the hardest of times for some in our local community.
With families coming together to share good times, those without are left feeling the sting of loneliness.
Our charity for December aims to alleviate this emotional distress and reduce any suicidal feelings by acting as a point of contact through their national helpline.
Samaritans’ vision is that fewer people die by suicide. In 2017, 5,821 suicides were registered in the UK.
The charity are also here for anyone feeling distressed, struggling to cope and in need of emotional support.
Samaritans of Northumbria opened in 1975 and is based in Ashington.
They have 30 Listening Volunteers and nine volunteers who support in a wide variety of ways. Up to the end of June 2018, Ashington branch had answered 4,486 calls, 652 emails and 240 SMS messages.
Branch running costs stand at £23,000 per year and all of that must come from donations.
If you’d like to donate, there will be collection buckets on match days in December, or you can go online.
