Liam Henderson’s brace inspired Morpeth Town to their eighth straight victory after a convincing 3-0 over Marske United at GER Stadium.

The forward struck into the top corner inside the first six minutes and Jordan Fry slotted home on 25 minutes during a dominant first-half.

Henderson scored his second 11 minutes after the restart before Marske captain Adam Wheatley received his marching order in the final minutes of the game.

Morpeth have scored seven goals and haven’t conceded in their last two away games, and move onto the midweek game with Bishop Auckland in fine form.

They went into the game having beat Hallam 4-0 in the FA Vase, and it was the visitors who started quickly and went ahead.

Michael Turner’s long throw was headed on by Matthew Grieve towards goal in the first minute before Morpeth took the lead soon.

Henderson picked the ball up off Ben Sayer, who was fouled in the build-up, and struck the ball into the top corner from 25-yards out.

Robert Dean was helpless for the opener, and the Highwaymen continued to remain on top, maintaining possession and carving up chances.

Henderson was played through in the box and from a tight angle he struck his shot, which deflected up and off the top of the crossbar.

However, the visitors didn’t dwell on that for long as they went and doubled their lead four minutes later.

Sayer’s deep free-kick was brought down in the area by Fry, who was left in acres of space, and the midfielder made no mistake with the finish, slotting home past Dean.

Marske thought they had a route back into the game when Danny Earl lofted the ball into the net over the approaching Karl Dryden, but the linesman had his flag up for offside.

Henderson came close to finding Morpeth’s third shortly after the restart, but his shot was saved low by the ‘keeper.

Keith Graydon’s sublime effort on 55 minutes was plucked out of the top corner by Dean, and the resulting corner was headed wide by Michael Hall at the back post.

The visitors were showing their quality and after turning the screw from the restart, they found a deserved third in the game.

Henderson beat the offside trap and found himself through on goal, and the forward kept his composure and curled in off the post.

The Highwaymen could have gone even further ahead just after the hour mark when Mark Davison’s header was saved brilliantly by Dean.

The Marske ‘keeper’s reacted well from close range to deny the forward before the hosts did create their first opening of the second-half.

Morpeth remained in control thereafter and their opponents were down to 10-men for the closing minutes of the game.

Henderson knocked the ball past Wheatley in the centre of the pitch, and the Marske captain brought the forward down heavily and picked up his second booking.

The visitors saw out the remaining minutes and picked up another three points and go into Tuesday’s meeting with Bishop Auckland in fine form.
