Morpeth Town are a team more fired up than ever to succeed in the FA Vase after the second-round draw was made.

The Highwaymen have been drawn to face either Ashton Athletic or Liversedge, pending a replay, but Town know they will be on their travels on November 11th as they start their road to Wembley.

Athletic are a side based in Greater Manchester and play in the North West Counties League Premier Division, currently sitting 13th.

But they are on a fine run of form of late, winning four of their last six, only narrowly losing 1-0 to Chorley (National League North) in the FA Cup.

They clearly had the edge over Liversedge in the first attempt at their FA Vase first round tie, winning 3-0 before the match was abandoned on 70 minutes due to the adverse weather conditions.

That gave Northern Counties East League Premier Division outfit Liversedge a second chance in the competition. Based in West Yorkshire, the 15th placed side would pose a mixed bag of a threat to Morpeth should they progress, with two wins, draws and defeats in their six home league games to date. Scoring and conceding 11, they are somewhat of an unknown quantity at Clayborn.

But Town chairman Ken Beattie is expecting a difficult trip regardless of the opponent.

“In the FA Vase, no game is an easy game. Whoever we play will be a difficult opponent,” said Beattie.

“But we have a good group of players here who are playing some great football and I am very hopeful of progressing in this competition.

“The squad are fired up, particularly after what happened last season when we were beating South Shields (eventual winners) and we had them beaten until the game was abandoned with only eight minutes left – with us leading 4-2 and them down to 10 men – when the lights went out.”

The replay between the two potential Morpeth opponents takes place on Thursday (26th).
