The Highwaymen ended their home campaign on Monday with a solid if unspectacular win over near neighbours Marske United.

Sean Taylor headed the hosts into the lead on 7 minutes but Marske levelled through Jamie Owens when he fired home. Liam Henderson put the Highwaymen ahead on the stroke of halftime before David Carson sealed the points when he converted the a penalty in the last minute.

The first chance of the game resulted in the first goal and it was the home side who took the lead. Ben Sayer registered his 29th assist of the season as he dinked a cross to the back post for Sean Taylor to nod home unmarked.

Marske did respond and their levelled in the 13th minute. United countered from a Morpeth corner and despite efforts to clear the ball, it fell to Jamie Owens and the striker drilled the ball home from the edge of the area giving home ‘keeper Dan Lowson no chance.

On 21 minutes, Sayer went close to putting the hosts in front again when he whipped a free kick towards the top corner but Robert Dean sprung across goal to tip it wide.

Marske threatened to go ahead in the game when Glen Butterworth brought the ball down majestically before turning but his near post drive was saved well by Lowson.

Joe Walton should have had the Town ahead on the half hour but he fired wide from 25 yards after Dean had come to head clear but lost the battle with Liam Henderson.

Right on the stroke of half time, Henderson did put the Champions ahead when he seized on a defensive error and strode forward before calmly slotting the ball past Dean.

Chances were at a premium in the second half but Walton was denied by a superb stop from Dean and Sayer blasted over the bar when well placed.

Jeff Henderson produced a sensational turn on the edge of the area and his finish deserved better but he lashed the ball high over the bar as the hosts looked to seal the points.

The points were finally sealed in the last minute when David Carson was body-checked in the area and he stepped up himself to coolly convert.

The Highwaymen conclude their season on Saturday when they make the longest trip of the season to take on Wisbech Town. Kick off is at 3pm and coverage will be through Mixlr and Twitter.
