The PLAYERTEK system is a wearable GPS system which is being used to monitor the performance of a host of clubs including Liverpool, Celtic and the Welsh national team.
Sports Therapist Steven Shaw explained how the system can help the club’s performance: “The data that you get from the system is pretty extensive and gives a great insight into a players’ performance, which allows us to personalise players training & recovery protocols.
“We can also monitor the quality of training sessions, for example we might have a practice, which on paper looks like a high intensity session but when we get the data back might actually not have been or maybe was too intense, so we can adjust next time with changing pitch sizes, rest periods etc so it’s a great aid.”
To date, we’ve only had two pods, so we’ve had to rotate them throughout the squad which has meant that some players have only worn a pod once or twice and you can’t really get any trends.

This means that we can look more at trends which can really help with injury reduction, for example you might have a players intensity scores drop off which could be showing fatigue which is a big factor in soft tissue injuries. It gives us some factual data to show that a player might need some kind of recovery intervention or possibly need a topping up on fitness depending on the scenario.
Shaw added: “Reducing injuries and playing more games with your strongest team wins games long term so anything you can do to reduce injuries is worth doing.
