Morpeth Town managed to capture the signing of former professional Matias Fondato, and the centre-half is delighted to have joined the FA Vase champions.

The 34-year-old has played professionally in Argentina, Paraguay, Colombia and Belgium, and joins the Highwaymen to boost their chances of more silverware next season.

The Argentinian watched Morpeth play many times last season, but the philosophy is what attracted him to the club.

“I am really delighted, happy, I seen them (Morpeth) play in the final, the Wembley final. They have a good philosophy of football and I am really looking forward,” he said.

“I have heard really good things,” he added. “I have seen many games, it’s a tough league, it’s a difficult league, so it’s a good challenge, it’s a nice challenge.

“Really nice, as I told you, I came to watch a game, and their philosophy of playing, they try to play football.

“As you know with the weather, they try to play the same and it is my way of playing also, so I am really looking forward.”

Fondato believes he will bring experience and everything that he “learned during the last years” both on and off the field, but he is aiming for success.

When asked to describe himself to the Morpeth fans, he said: “Defensively, in a good way, I am an aggressive defender, like a tough defender, and with the ball I always try to play, except for in an extreme situation, I always try to play.”

The Highwaymen won the FA Vase for the first time in their history last month at Wembley, and the defender is looking to continue to play “positive”, while also achieving results along the way.

He added: “Always thinking positive about reaching good results, but also with a good way of playing, so that is the main thing.”

“We just be ambitious and hungry and keep working in the same way and also try and add things or improve, it is going to be a good season.”
