Morpeth finished their maiden Evo-Stik East campaign with a hardfought victory over Wisbech Town. Liam Henderson grabbed the only goal of the game when he turned and fired home in the 41st minute to settle a game of few chances.

The game was far from a classic with the wind dominating proceedings and stopping both sides from playing with any game of fluidity.

The hosts started the game on the front foot and had the first chance on 2 minutes when Toby Hilliard stung the palms of Dan Lowson at the near post.

They fashioned the next chance on 7 minutes but Layton Maddison dragged his shot wide of the far post when well placed in the box.

Morpeth did respond but it took until the 40th minute for them to look like taking the lead. Great play between Sean Taylor and David Carson ended with the former squaring for Liam Henderson but he had the ball pinched off his toe by Luke Hipwell.

There was no denying Henderson a minute later when Joe Walton played the ball into his feet and the striker turned his man before firing a low effort across Dan Swan and into the bottom corner.

In the second half it was a more controlling performance from the visitors with Taylor putting the ball over the bar on 52 minutes. In fairness to Taylor, the ball bobbled as he struck it.

Taylor did think that he grabbed his goal on 64 minutes but after nodding home at the back post from Joe Walton’s cross but was denied by the flag of the assistant on the near side.

The game should have been sealed with a quarter of an hour left to play but Henderson saw his low shot beat Swan but the wind held the ball up and it just failed to cross the line.

The final chance fell to Michael Turner but the full-back headed over the bar following an inswinging free kick by Ben Sayer.

The referee blew the final whistle and brought the curtain down on an exceptional season as they completed the double; adding the Techflow Marine Northumberland Senior Cup to the Evo-Stik East title.

Everyone connected with the club should be immensely proud of what has been achieved this season and focus can now turn to the Evo-Stik Premier League next season.
