Morpeth Town is delighted to announce the return of Ryan Wombwell to the club after two loan spells at Craik Park.

The versatile defender has been impressive during both stints at the Highwaymen and, after leaving Spennymoor Town, opted to return to a ground where he has enjoyed some of his best football during his fledgling career.

Able to play in a variety of positions, Wombwell joined us on loan from Gateshead before being bought by Spennymoor last season.

He is excited to return and get back into the fold as Morpeth prepare for another challenging campaign in the Pitching In NPL Premier Division.

“I’ve had 2 good spells here in the past that have been cut short,” he told the club website after agreeing a permanent deal.

“I really enjoyed my football when being here and settled in well with the lads and management team.

“I’m looking forward to getting going again and looking at the squad, it looks really strong so hopefully it will be a successful season.

“To be honest, I was happy and playing well just before I left, but that’s football and opportunities come and you have to move on to the next challenge.

“Now I’ve got the chance to come back and help Morpeth on a permanent basis so I’m relishing that.

“I still have ambitions to play as high as I can and I want that to be with this club. So hopefully this season I can progress as a player as well as the team progressing and finishing higher than last year.

“I think being on loan your focus is spread between the two clubs but now I can just focus on Morpeth and giving my best for the club.”

Although thankful for the opportunity in County Durham, Wombwell believes a switch away from Brewery Field and Spenny was the right move for him.

“I played the first handful of games when I first signed,” he added.

“After that I didn’t get the game time I wanted. I still learned a lot there; they’ve got a good group and I wish them well for this season but game time is the most important thing for me so hopefully I can have an uninterrupted season.”
