Standing by the side of the pitch attempting to reflect on what he’d just seen, Morpeth Town manager Nick Gray couldn’t hide the disappointment and frustration.

It was on November 11th last year that The Highwaymen travelled to Ashton Athletic full of hope and optimism at the start of an FA Vase campaign that promised much but saw an ultimately frustrating departure at Town’s first hurdle.

In truth, Morpeth laid siege to the Ashton goal for the entirety of the second half, but an early strike was enough for the home side as they progressed 1-0.

A quirk of fate has seen the two sides drawn together once more, this time in the FA Cup First Qualifying Round, and, although not saying it directly, that result still doesn’t sit right in the minds of those at the club, with a renewed sense of determination to get a more positive result when they travel to Brocstedes Park on Saturday.

“It is probably one of the most disappointing results I have had in the years I have been here,” said manager Gray.

“We didn’t get the result, we didn’t play particularly well and I can still remember how we felt after it and so can Twinny (Stephen Turnbull, player assistant and player) and the majority of the players. It is another game which is a chance to progress in the FA Cup. But we’ll be right at it going there.”
