New signing Liam Henderson believes Morpeth Town have the ability to go for the league next season following their FA Vase success at Wembley in May.

The 26-year-old had nothing but great things to say about personnel at his old club Spennymoor Town, but joining the Highwaymen was the “right decision” to make.

“It’s a club on the up, they have just had a great victory at Wembley. They were underdogs, but 4-1 doesn’t reflect that,” Henderson said.

“I am happy to have signed, and hopefully we can kick on this season and hopefully go for the league.

“I did (follow Morpeth last season), I spoke to Keith Graydon a lot on the FA Vase run, its always nice to see who’s going to go far and the further they went, of course I kept an eye on them.

“Of course its hard, it’s a great club (Spennymoor), I’ve got nothing but good things to say. The chairman Brad Groves, Jason Ainsley, the coaching staff and all the players.

“The changing room was unbelievable there and it was hard to leave, but it was one of those decisions that I had to make, and it felt like it was the right decision to make.”

Henderson has played in the Northern League once before for Spennymoor, a side in which he has 153 appearances for, scoring 84 goals along the way.

The former Watford man played a pivotal role in Spennymoor’s season, which seen the Moors promoted to the Evo Stick Northern Premier Division after a 2-0 victory over Northwich Victoria in the play-off final

Henderson, who scored 18 goals in 48 games last season, added: “Hopefully goals,” Henderson replied to being asked what he’d like to bring to the side. “I believe that’s why Nick brought me here, to try and bring goals to the team.

“I had one good year in the Northern League and hopefully I can replicate that.

“Id like to think so (score goals), and I believe that the players Nick’s bringing in, and the players that are already within the team, will create chances for me, and hopefully I will be there to put them in.”

The forward spoke of how welcoming both chairman Ken Beattie and manager Nicky Gray were in their quest to sign the goalscorer and also when he first arrived at the club.

“They’ve (Ken Beattie and Nick Gray) been nothing but welcoming, they’ve done a lot of work, ground work, to get us here,” added Henderson.

“I like the pitch, I know the chairman has spent a lot of money on it and playing on that every week is only going to help.”

“Nick (Gray) plays the style of football that I want to play, the same as Spennymoor, passing the ball.”

Henderson will be looking to make his first league appearance for the Highwaymen as they are set to take on Jarrow Roofing in the opening game of the season on 9 August.
