Morpeth Town midfielder Mitch Hancox wants a promotion push after signing permanently for the Highwaymen.

Formerly of Birmingham City, Macclesfield, and York City, and most recently at Spennymoor Town, Hancox had spent time on loan at Craik Park last season.

In what was a productive six-game spell in November and early December, the versatile midfielder tasted defeat just once as Town surged up the table.

Although narrowly suffering relegation, the Highwaymen are looking for a swift return and Hancox is hoping to have his say.

“I spoke to the skip, Jeff (Henderson), and I know they’ve kept quite a few of the lads – there was good quality there last year but it just didn’t click. Hopefully, with my influence, I can try and help,” said Hancox.

“I’m an experienced head now and I’ve had a couple of promotions in my career – I want another one so we’ve got to go for it.

“Ever since the manager and Jimmy (James Armstrong, assistant manager) got in touch I was interested in trying to get it over the line because I enjoyed my time here.

“It was only a month, but it was really positive. The boys were doing well and it was just a shame what happened.

“That spell was a massive influence on me signing. I really get on with the gaffer and other staff and still speak with some of the lads. It’s a great opportunity to play some games of football and help the club with a better season.”

Town boss Craig Lynch was delighted to secure Hancox’s signature, a key acquisition and signing number five of a busy summer.

“Mitch coming back is massive; he has a great CV, is still at a good age and wants to play and push to be successful – that’s what we’re trying to build this season,” said his new boss, Lynch.

“We are delighted Mitch has come back. I think it’s always a bit of a pat on the back to us when a player returns as we try to create that environment for players to enjoy – we’ve had our fair share over the years that have returned.”
