Morpeth Town’s latest signing Harry Gardiner is looking to get back on the goal trail as quickly as possible at Craik Park.

The striker, who came through Sunderland’s academy, most recently featured at Blyth Spartans but joined the Highwaymen as part of a summer of squad changes.

Gardiner has endured a difficult time with injuries but is motivated by goals and getting the best out of himself for the benefit of his current charges.

“I’ve heard nothing but positive things about the club and after having discussions with Craig (Lynch, Morpeth manager) and James (Armstrong, assistant manager), I knew this was the best place for me to come and enjoy my football the most,” said our new front man.

“Personally, since leaving Sunderland, I’ve had two years full of injuries and not much playing time, so my aim is to stay fit and get a good amount of games this season.

“I feel like if I can do that performances on the pitch will follow.

“I love to put myself in positions to convert easy chances. As a centre forward you have to love and want to score goals and I try and put myself into positions to do that regularly during 90 minutes.”

Lynch has sought to bolster an attack that struggled to find the back of the net last season. Remodelling the forward line with the introduction of Jarrett Rivers left him still searching for a centre forward, with Sam Hodgson still recovering from knee ligament surgery.

“Harry’s someone we’ve spoken to the last few years but it hasn’t worked out till now,” the Morpeth manager said.

“He’s had a hard few years with injuries but me and James (Armstrong, assistant manager) know all about that and want to give these lads a chance who haven’t had a good time of things.

“He’s a striker who wants to score goals, similar to Adam (Lennox), and we’ve tried to bolster our attack after a below par season in the top end last year.

“We’re doing what we can to put it right and with the signings we’ve made, I believe we can do that.”
