The Highwaymen travel to FC United of Manchester on Tuesday night, as they go in search of a first ever victory at Broadhurst Park.

Morpeth could, results dictating, go top of the Pitching In NPL Premier Division table but know they face a tough trip to Greater Manchester.

LAST TIME OUT

Despite being in the same division, FC United can say with some assurance they were the victim of a cup upset on Saturday. Facing Liversedge in the FA Trophy Third Qualifying Round, hosting FC United would have fancied their chances against a side struggling badly in the NPL Premier Division’s relegation zone. However, the formbook was ripped up as Zac Dearnley’s 18th minute effort proved the difference between the two sides. Despite the hosts frantically searching for an equaliser, they couldn’t find it and exited the competition.

The game at Broadhurst Park will be a battle of two sides who have been dumped out of the FA Trophy, after Morpeth Town also fell through the trapdoor. They were beaten 3-2 at home by Lancaster City, who were thankful to Nico Evangelinos for scoring a hat-trick. Dale Pearson responded for the Highwaymen with a brace but it wasn’t enough to avoid defeat at Craik Park and an early exit.

THE GAFFER

Highwaymen boss Craig Lynch wants an improved squad mentality as his side look to bounce back from defeat at home to Lancaster.

“We need to be better than that, our mentality needs to be better. We’ve got to be buzzing for games,” he said.

“We’ve been doing well and on Saturday we hit a stumbling block, but we weren’t good enough.”

FC United manager Neil Reynolds wasn’t happy with his side’s display on Saturday.

“We failed to break them down. Did we do enough? No,” he said.

“I’ve said to the lads it’s not fair. People work hard all week, people work hard behind the scenes to get a matchday on. So much work has gone in and what I want is 16 lads to go out there, stick to a gameplan and we didn’t do that.

“You can’t take it for granted that you can win football games. That’s not acceptable (on Saturday). I’m sure they’ll bounce back.”
