Morpeth Town return to action on Tuesday night with the visit of Ashton United to Craik Park (7.45pm).

The Highwaymen have had a week off after the weekend’s fixtures were postponed due to the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.

But they’ll be hoping to return to action with a victory at the expense of Ashton in the Pitching In NPL Premier Division.

LAST TIME OUT

Morpeth were last in action in the Emirates FA Cup First Qualifying Round, travelling to Warrington for a replay.

After conceding just before half-time through Dale Pearson’s own goal – he nodded into his own net at the near post – the Highwaymen responded positively and restored parity on 61 minutes when Jack Foalle capitalised on a goalkeeping blunder to slot home at the back post.

But that equaliser was wiped out seconds later as Evan Gumbs glanced a header into the far corner to give a Warrington a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

Ashton were last in action last Tuesday night when they travelled to Northumberland for an FA Cup replay. They made the journey to Woodhorn Lane in Ashington, only to be well beaten by their Northern League hosts, 3-0.

THE GAFFER

Morpeth Town manager Craig Lynch is keen to make home advantage count and shrug off the disappointment of exiting the FA Cup.

“We just want to win, it doesn’t matter what we do we just want to win,” said the Highwaymen boss.

“We’ve got a home game against Ashton. We’ve got to look at home games and take the game to teams, we’ve got to have a go at them and play with intent.

“We’re not far off matching these top teams, we’re close and we’ve got to take belief in the fact we’re that close.”

Ashton boss Michael Clegg was disappointed by their own exit from the FA Cup and is seeking a reaction from his squad when they journey to Craik Park for their second trip to Northumberland on a Tuesday night this season.

“(Ashington) beat us 3-0 and they were worthy of it. We don’t deserve to go through based on the two games,” he said.

“I think a couple of additions could spice this group up because I think too many are coming and picking the shirt up because they’ve had good starts.

“They should know that doesn’t work with me.”
